10 Things Tuneup: Getting ready for the slopes and snow trails

Jim Dagata, a snowboarder, back country and cross country skier and member of the Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit, offers tips these tips for getting ready for the slopes and snow trails this season. First and foremost, he said, make sure you’re in good physical condition.  “If you’re not in shape, you’re not going to have as good a time and more likely to be injured.”

1) Hydration and nutrition. Drink water before, during and after you ski, snowboard or snowshoe. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle or hydration pack. Bring some high-energy snacks, and have a good lunch.

2) Poles. Carefully inspect them. Make sure the tips are intact, the poles are not bent or cracked and that the baskets and straps are in proper working orders.

3) Boots. Do they still fit? It’s an important question to answer at home, especially for growing kids. If you get to the snow and find out the answer is no they don’t fit, you’ re probably in for a day of misery. Make sure the buckles are working and and the laces are in good shape for snowboarding boots.
