Under the shade of the old gum tree
Ten boats - including the Buffalo - departed England in August and once they had all arrived by late December, it was time to move the colony from its Kangaroo Island base at Nepean Bay to something more permanent on the mainland.
As the longboats made their way to the beach, no doubt Robert Gouger was watching their progress. As the Colonial Secretary, he had already landed at Holdfast Bay and had built a makeshift camp of tents at the lagoons. The colony had already begun under his command but the arrival of Hindmarsh signalled the start of SA's government.
Once they had landed, the official party headed straight for Gouger's tent. There, the commission was read and oaths were administered. They then emerged and - standing under an old gum tree - Stevenson read the document that became known as the Proclamation of South Australia.
City of Holdfast Bay's local history co-ordinator Dieuwke Jessop is fascinated by the Proclamation and has spent years studying and researching not only the day itself but its evolution into the yearly commemoration South Australians know today.
