Thundering Herd hosts upstart Belmont
Marshall has a chance to beat one of recent darlings of the NCAA Tournament when Belmont comes calling tonight for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Henderson Center.
The Bruins (7-4), out of Nashville, Tenn., and the Atlantic Sun Conference, have played in the NCAAs four times in the last six seasons, losing all their first-round games, but nearly pulled a shocker for the ages in 2008 when, as a No. 15 seed, they were shaded by mighty Duke 71-70.
Belmont also lost to Duke in its opener this season, again by a single point (77-76). The Bruins' other losses have come to Memphis (97-81), Middle Tennessee State (65-62) and Miami, Ohio (66-61) on Saturday.
In Saturday's game, Bruins coach Rick Byrd was ejected on two technical fouls with 9:37 left in the game. Miami used the ensuing free throws to build its lead to 50-37, but the Bruins whittled it back to 58-56 with 2:17 remaining and missed a 3-pointer that could have given them the lead.
