MONTE VISTA -The San Luis Valley Public Lands Center is now selling Christmas tree cutting permits. The permits cost $8 each with a limit of five permits per household. Trees must be growing on land managed by the Rio Grande National Forest or the Bureau of Land Management’s San Luis Valley Field Office. All trees must be at least 100 feet away from any campground, picnic area or road and can be up to five inches in diameter at shoulder height. Cutting trees within Wilderness Areas or the Conejos Canyon is prohibited. Christmas tree permits may be purchased at any of the SLV Public Lands Center offices, located in Del Norte, Monte Vista, La Jara and Saguache. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Creede office is open on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Christmas tree permits will also be available at the Rainbow Grocery in South Fork, Green Spot Garden Center and Antiques in Alamosa and Hometown Food Market in Antonito.
