Its always pretty impressive and maybe a little frightening when firetrucks and chiefs cars come down a street with lights flashing and sirens blaring.
But on Monday night, on narrow Church Street in Garnerville, the volunteers from the S.W. Johnson Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 were there to rescue Christmas for a family.
Shannon Coleman has been supporting her parents, her younger brother and sister, and her own two children, trying to get by on the salary of a medical assistant at Bardonia Pediatrics.
Her dad, Rudy Higdon, had back surgery a year ago and then open heart surgery in June and hasnt been able to work. Her mom, Donna Higdon, is in the same predicament because of a ruptured Achilles tendon that required surgery to repair and will need still another operation soon.
Colemans brother, Jordan Higdon, who is 19, is delaying college to try to find a job to help out, but that still leaves his older sister to fend for the family. Her sister, Simone Higdon, 14, is a student at Fieldstone Secondary School.
