I'll admit that like Dale, I use plastic bags as trash liners, so they aren't "single-use" for me. At the same time, I don't remember the last time I got a plastic bag from a store. Here in D.C., they charge 5 cents for every plastic bag, so a lot of people have reusable bags.
I also agree with the questions Dale asks at the beginning of his comment: what about the rest of the packaging that is so often overused? A majority of what he lists is recyclable, and yet it isn't recycled a lot of the time.
Banning plastic bags will not ultimately solve the problem of harming and destroying God's creation. Changing people's attitudes and minds and helping them understand why all this excessive packaging is harmful is the only way to truly solve the problem.
Dale, I want to address the issue about paper bags and how the costs will be passed on to consumers, it will hurt the environment, etc. Paper bags are reusable, decomposable, and come from renewable resources. They should be cheaper than plastic bags, but since plastic (which is made from oil, and ultimately not renewable) is so heavily subsidized, synthetic materials are appalling cheaper than more natural products. Now isn't that a bigger problem?
