He’ll also have to do it while trying to claim momentum out of a far-back third-place win.
That’s not how Huntsman portrayed the situation at his raucous party here.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I think we are in the hunt,” Huntsman said, rousing hundreds of supporters into a “Join the Hunt” chant.
In his speech, Huntsman sought to contrast himself with the rest of the Republican field for the homage he paid to old-fashioned retail politicking and giving New Hampshire voters the individual attention they demand.
“We’ve proved the point that this state wants its candidates to earn it the old-fashioned way, that’s on the ground handshake by handshake, conversation by conversation, vote by vote. We got it done, ladies and gentlemen,” he said.
Holding more than 170 public events here since he entered the race, Huntsman was counting on his long slog and intense on-the-ground presence to deliver a strong primary showing for him. His showing here also hinged on the large number of independent voters in the state — exit polling showed 4 out of 10 voters were unaffiliated, a record-breaking number — to give him a critical boost.
