Hiking in clown shoes – that’s sort of how snowshoeing feels.
Having two large slatted plastic trays strapped to your feet while you traipse about a mountain certainly gives the wearer a particular lolloping gait. Add a red nose and rosy cheeks from all the huffing and puffing in the cold, and the overall effect is quite comical.
Undeterred by our humorous-looking footwear, our group set off gamely on a trail above the Swiss resort of Arosa in fog and falling snow, feeling like Arctic explorers conquering new worlds.
But our dragging shuffle meant we were soon overtaken by hikers in normal boots, and we did wonder whether it might just be easier to take off the snowshoes and step it up a little.
Nevertheless, with the aid of our hikers’ poles we soon got into our stride, and when a change in the weather brought out bright sunshine, our guide Freddie whipped us off-piste into virgin snow. Ah, this was just the sort of Alpine adventure we’d envisaged – crisp white snow that we could make our mark on.
