British woman attempts record solo trek across Antarctica
A 33-year-old British explorer set out today for Antarctica, where she will soon begin a 1,000-mile journey across Antarctica in hopes of becoming the first person to cross the frozen continent alone under her own power, the Associated Press tells us.
If Felicity Aston completes the estimated 70-day trek in late January, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound adventurer from Kent would also be the first woman to cross Antarctica alone, be the first British woman to cross the continent and would set a record for the longest solo polar expedition by a woman.
It's also her first solo expedition.
"This is ... the first time I will have spent this length of time without company. It's part of the challenge of the expedition, to see how I'll cope with it," she told AP in a phone interview today from Punta Arenas, Chile, before boarding a charter flight to an Antarctica base after a week's delay because of bad weather. Once there, she'll fly to the Leverett Glacier, where the Ross Ice Shelf meets the rocky coast, and begin her journey. She first must climb thousands of feet up through the Transantarctic Mountains before reaching the expansive central plateau.
