Up early, walking on a trip out West
Last week, Keith and Lisa Duncan and Mack McKinney sat in the Duncans’ sunlit den talking about their hiking trip to Glacier National Park in August.
It was unseasonably warm outside for a January. In Eden, Patrick Street looked like April: forsythia flaunting yellow buds and daffodils showing their stems.
The weather was similar to Montana’s August, except there snow fell Aug. 10.
Neighbors and friends, Keith and Lisa, and Mack and Mary Jane are seasoned hikers. The couples — Keith, a former Rockingham County commissioner and general contractor, and Lisa, a community leader; and Mack, a general contractor, and Mary Jane, a retired teacher — have hiked together several times. Mack’s sister, Judy Nance (and her husband, Ron) of Randolph County encouraged Mack to try hiking the Grand Canyon five years ago. The Duncans and other friends from Greensboro and Raleigh soon made up a hiking team.
Glacier National Park, in northwestern Montana along the Canadian border, is part of the Bitterroot Mountain Range and is open only four months of the year. Sixty-five inches of snow fell last summer in July. This is not a place for amateur hikers.
