Boracay water is safe for swimming and other recreational activities, according to Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
"Water quality there is very good," DENR Secretary Michael Defensor said during a press conference Thursday.
He attributed this to DENR's continuing waste management, monitoring and testing of water in the world-famous tourism island of Boracay.
Aside from monitoring and testing, Defensor said, establishment of a sewage treatment plant in Boracay was critical to lowering of coliform levels there.
He reported a total of 329 commercial establishments and 239 households are already connected to this treatment plant.
DENR noted Boracay has 595 commercial establishments and about 2,748 households.
Defensor said the agency will continue implementing its various waste management activities to help ensure improvement in Boracay's water quality.
