Filipina powerlifter, Erlina "Lily" Pecante, broke the world record during the 8th World Masters Power Lifting Championships 2005 in Pretoria, Africa.
The rest of the four-member Filipino team, a delegation sent by the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines, also bagged medals in their respective categories.
Philippines Ambassador to South Africa, Virgilio A. Reyes, commended the team for their exceptional performance. "I congratulate these four world-class Filipino powerlifters who proved their strength by beating their contenders and breaking world record. Their display of strength is a manifestation of the Filipino’s physical and moral strength."
The Philippines powerlifting team was composed of Peter Edward Torres, a lifter competing in the 100 kg class; Catalina
Oca, in the 44 kg - 56 kg class; Erlina Pecante, in the 75 kg - 90 kg class, and Antonio Taguibao, in the 62 kg - 67.5 kg class.
Ambassador Reyes related that Erlina "Lily" Pecante broke the world record by lifting 205 kilograms in the squat event on October 6, aside from winning three gold medals in her weight class.
Likewise, Peter Edward Torres won a gold medal in the dead lift event, a silver medal in the squat and a bronze medal in the bench-press event, garnering the third overall honors in his weight class.
Catalina "Nina" Oca won a bronze medal in the bench press event.
