Miss Earth 2005

Alexandra Braun Waldeck was crowned Miss Earth 2005 in the world's third largest beauty pageant, next to Miss Universe and Miss World. Miss Earth was held in Manila, Philippines on October 23, 2005.

Alexandra is a 5'8" tall, 22-year-old beauty from Venezuela who bested 79 other candidates in this year's contest.

Miss Dominican Republic, Amell Santana de Jesus, won Miss Earth - Air (First Runner-Up); Miss Poland, Katarzyna Borowicz, is Miss Earth - Water (Second Runner-Up); and Miss Serbia and Montenegro, Jovana Marjanovic, Miss Earth - Fire (Third Runner-Up).

Special Awards were also given to various contestants: Miss Photogenic award went to Chile; Miss Friendship to Canada; Miss Talent to Ukraine; Best in National Costume went to Korea; Best in Long Gown to Venezuela. Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Korea, Venezuela and Poland received Miss Pond's Youthful awards.

Miss Earth is a privately-organized annual beauty contest that aims to promote public awareness of environmental protection issues and promote tourism.

It was conceptualized by Philippine-based Carousel Productions, Inc. to search and develop true "beauties for a cause." Miss Earth's delegates and winners promote worthwhile environmental causes and get involved in caring and the preservation of Mother Earth.

During the pageant month, Miss Earth contestants tour select eco-tourism destinations in Ilocos Norte, Bohol, Boracay and other parts of the Philippines. Contestants also take part in treeplanting ceremonies and various environmental and cultural immersion programs.

Last year's Miss Earth winner is Priscilla Meirelles of Brazil. Miss Earth 2006 will be held in Santiago, Chile, the first time that it will be staged outside of the Philippines.
