Precious Lara Quigaman of the Philippines was crowned Miss International 2005 last night, coming out first among contestants from 52 countries and regions in the beauty pageant held in Tokyo, Japan.
President Arroyo immedately congratulated Quigaman for winning the prestigious beauty title.
"I congratulate Precious Lara Quigaman for winning the Miss International title. She joins a long list of Filipinos who have brought our country honor and prestige not only for their beauty but also for their intelligence, charm, and grace."
"May she serve as a responsible role model for young women in our country."
Quigaman, a 22-year-old fashion model, cried for joy as her victory was announced to the audience at a concert hall in downtown Tokyo, where she beat 11 other finalists.
Yadira Geara Cury, 19, of the Dominican Republic came in second, followed by Susanna Laine, 23, of Finland.
