Philippine high yield rice
among the top 50 inventions
of the past half-century

The Philippine high yield rice was cited by the US-based magazine Popular Mechanics as one of the top 50 inventions of the past five decades.

The other top inventions listed include the MP3 player, jet airliner, in-vitro fertilization, microwave oven, Sony Walkmann, the cell phone, MRI, communications satellite, video games, and the automated teller machine.

The Popular Mechanics top 50 inventions features scientific and technological advances that have transformed our world in the past half-century.

The Philippine rice was released in 1966 by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). It is a semi-dwarf, high-yield Indica variety that, in conjunction with high yield wheat, ushered in the Green Revolution. Indica rice thrives in tropical regions of Asia and South America.

This invention raised the worldwide rice production by more than 20 percent by 1970.

The top 50 most pioneering inventions of the past 50 years were selected by a panel of 25 authorities at 17 museums and universities all across the United States. Their collective expertise spans aeronautics, biology, physics, medicine, automobiles and technology.
