The Popular Mechanics top 50 inventions features scientific and technological advances that have transformed our world in the past half-century. The Philippine rice was released in 1966 by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). It is a semi-dwarf, high-yield Indica variety that, in conjunction with high yield wheat, ushered in the Green Revolution. Indica rice thrives in tropical regions of Asia and South America. This invention raised the worldwide rice production by more than 20 percent by 1970. The top 50 most pioneering inventions of the past 50 years were selected by a panel of 25 authorities at 17 museums and universities all across the United States.
